The United States Senate* ratified the treaty without obtaining indications of Canada's approval, or the approval of the British Ambassador at Washington. Sir "Wilfrid Lauricv, the Premier, remarked that the river had altered, and the situation involved serious issues requiring careful investigation, before the Government could ask the Royal assent to the treaty.
