The Senate of the New Zealand University has conferred the following degrees on South Canterbury students: —Master of Arts, Bella Dytes Cross (with first-class honours in botany): Bachelor of Arts, Nora Blackmore, Michael Christian ! ■ Mr Richard Wood, ' formerly of Kingsdown and Timaru, now of Lower Hutt. father of Mrs J. W. Holdgate, is paving a visit to Timaru. Mr .Tas, Hay, solicitor of Timaru, has been elected a representative of the Canterbury District Court of Convocation on the University Senate. Mr C. E. Shallerass has jnst returned from a trip to the West Coast. The Hon. T. Y. Duncan is to reprernnt the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association at the annual conference to be held this' year in Wellington. The Rev. C. Penfiey. nrccessor to the Rev. P. W. Fairclough, arrived in Waimnte on Friday last.

Mr Robert McNab, late Minister for Lands, will arrive in Timaru to-dav.

Mr W. Wall,- whose death is announced in this issue, was one of who risked their lives in succouring the crews of the Benvenue and the City of Perth, when those two vessels were wrecked at Timaru on May 14th, 1882. Mr Wall's name is among those on the monument.

On Saturday evening a number of Mr L. Aides' friends met at the Grosvenor Hotel to bid him farewell prior to his departure for England, where bo is going to complete his architectural studies. Mr Walter Raymond acted as chairman, and in a very pleasing speech referred to Mr Miles' many virtues both as a sport and as a friend. Messrs Webb, Revell, Waslibourn, G.Priest and King testified to their approval of the sentiments expressed by Mr Raymond. A Mosgiel rug and case of razors (the latter beariiig the inscription " L. L. Miles from a few comrades, Timaru, N.Z.") were then presented, and Mr Miles thanked his friends for their gift and kind expressions. Mr Miles leaves Timaru by the second express to-day to join the s.s, Corinthic at Wellington.
