VOLUNTEERING.

CADETS IN CAMP. | Yesterday afternoon the High School Cadets, to the number of about 65, went into camp for their annual training in this department of warfare. The. n i»np is located in a paddock otf Otipua road, opposite the end of North street', a high and sunny, though wind-swept location. There are thirteen tents in -ill. ten for the cadets, and two for. the officers, while the remaining one is a hospital marquee. The tents were all erected by the boys yesterday afternoon, and they did the work-neatly and expeditiously. There is an abundance of straw on which to sleep, eleven bales of pressed straw having been obtained for the purpose, and the boys appear to have very comfortable quarters. Captain Johnson is in charge of the camp, other officers in camp being Lieutenants Hall-Jones and Malthus, Colour-Sergeant King, Sergeants McKibbin. Valentino, O'Donoghue and Cuthhcrt. Corporals Smith, Amiaud, Joyce and Hardeastle, Lance-Corporals McDonald, Valentino, Bowker and Cotter. Sergeant-Major Healey. of the South Canterbury Battalion, is present as drill instructor, and Mr G. A. Simmers, rector of the High School, is also in camp, but not in an official capacity. The camp is to last for a week, and the boys will have about three hours' drill 2>er day. with an occasional sham fight to vary the monotony, and give instruction in the actual use of powder. For-the sham fights a good supply of blank c-rtridgo has been taken into camp. Tn the matter of provisions for eating, the boys are apparently going to be well treated. Thev have the janitor from fheir school (Mr Bryant} as cook, and the tradesmen's carts will rill regularly at the camp.. Last night 401bs of sausages imro to be seen hanging on a stifk ready for use at Weakfast, this morning. The boys will attend a Church parade, on Sunday next.
