TIMARU FLORAL SOCIETY

A meeting of the committee of tlie Timaru Floral and Horticultural Society was held on Saturday evening. Present —Messrs \V. G. Irwin (chairman), A. Beswick, R., Grant, J. A. MaciloiiiUd, G. J. Sealey, K. Morgan, sen., H. S. Russell, T. Low, (... E. Knowles, jun., C. A. Schmidt, and the secretary (.Jas. K. Macdonakh. The business for the evening was that of fixing a suitable dale lor the 'autumn show. Members pointed out that the weather of late had not tended to hasten the ripening of fruit and the growth of llowers. but if warmer weather came soon everything this year would show an abundance in quantity and excellence in quality, as growers have not had the difficulty of contending with such dry summers as' were experienced during the last two seasons. To make the show date suitable to all growers, members decided that the lirst Wednesdav and Thursday (3rd and 4th) of March. 1909, he the dates for the show. This was agreed to unanimously. The judges for the different seel ions were then' chosen, and the secretary will write to those selected, when, on their acceptance, their names will be published. The chairman. Messrs Grant. Ilussell, and the secretarv, were appointed an advertising committee. The staging committee appointed were Messrs Russell, (.'rant and Schmidt. Mr Beswick was appointed on the lighting committee. The committee anticipated this year to have a record entry for all exhibits, and various suggestions have been made which will he carried out to meet the wishes of the exhibitors.

A special attraction this year for the autumn show is the competition

for the "Gibson Memorial Cup.' In the} garden competition for the Hurdlo* shield, the various schools are vying with one another For the honour (?) holding this shield for twelve montlr-, and the committee this year also anticipate that the exhibits Iroin llje schools competing will he worth going a long way' to see. ; The committee, will meet again on, Jn-miarv 30th, when full reports will .be had from all sub-committees.
