WASHDYKE PLOUGHING MATCH.

A PLEASANT HOLIDAY

Beautiful weather favoured the Wash dyke ploughing match yesterday, and tlio few score people who assembled in (lie afternoon to tec the twelve competitor compLU» their work, agreed tlctt the time had been parsed in a pleaLsant and interesting way. while tbe competitors certainly found the work interesting. It is four'years since a ploughing match was held at Washdyke, and if some Waimate ploughmen had not > come up, this one | would have been a failure. Some of the old • vivid recollectiote pf .the mipbrtance• Oiat was atfached to the annual ploughing matches in the early days, and still retain the opinion that 6uch contests are worth keeping up, for the hake of giving ploughmen an interest in the work," and encouraging a spirit "; of emulation in doing good work. It was one or two of theie, especially Mr M. Mate, of- Pleasant Point, who worked up the necessary preliminaries for the match of yesterday. Ho collected most of the subtxriptions to provide prizes. Mr J. B. Cochrane, lent his assistance, Mr B. Cochrane accepted tl»o post ,of secretary, and Mr kindly lent a very Miitable lea paddock opposite the racecourse pn the Temuka road. The entries being only a dozen the match was not to be compared vnthr the Kcent one at Wnimate in pdint of ntunbers, but thqre Mas equally good work done, ami perhaps equally poor worVr, "so that the visitors had variety of - rfnults on which to fxercise their judgment; and indeed the dozen ploughmen pi-ovided quite enough of that kyid of mental cxerdne, and of physiial excr-«-i«e in walking to aud fro along the heads of the ridgfk. Th<» }iaddock was nic-- auu even in quality except just at one edge where the ground was made crumbly by the shade ot trees and the spread of their toots. The soil was in very good condition for ploughing, though too dry to tnfce the high polish which prize-winning ploughmen like to see on the tipiurmu slice.
