THE WEATHER.
Rain started to fall at Winchester on Tuesday about 5 p.m., and till yesterday at 5 p.m. about .4 of au inch had fallen. The rain will do much good. Following so quickly after a week's almost midsummer weather, the change which took place in the Geraldine district on Tuesday was anything but a pleasant one. Ram fell heavily throughout the night and all day ytsterday. It would have been much more wvJcome had it not been accompanied by hucll a marked lowering of the temperature,, but. tbe sud-. den cold snap caused a fr-esh fall of snow on the , hills at the back of Woodburv. This will be a rather terioUs matter for any shipowners who have already shorn their flocks, and unlens a thawing nor'wester soon follows there will be a repetition of tho late frosts which "retarded spring growth so much last year. The following is Captain Edwin's .weather .forecast- up to 5 p.m. v to-day: "Strong winds-to gale from the northwest, changing towards west and southwest. are probable at all places northward of Napier and Wanganui, but from the south-east, changing c-oiithward'tiverce 'o Timaru and Queenstown. and from bet.ween uoith-east and south-east elsewhere. Rain j* probable everywhere, with a ialliug barometer."
