TIMARU FAREWELL MEETING.

Patrons—.Messrs A. S. Elworthy and W. Hay; president, Mr H. Howard; secretary—Mr J. H. Rodgers; hon. judge —Mr T. Kett; hon. slipper—Mr J. M. Fairbairn. • ■ -

Another, day's coursing on the Plumpton at Washdyke brought the South Canterbury Coursing Club's Farewell meeting of the 1908 season to a close yesterday afternoon and it must be confessed that the close was a rather ignoble one, lor, owing to a shortage of hares, the owners of the two dogs in the" final of each stake had to share the .honour of carrying off first prize..'- It was rather unfortunate that this contingency should have happened for naturally there was a good deal of interest taken in the finals, which would have concluded a (successful day's coursing. If anything the attendance of the public was not as large as on Thursday and as Thursday's total of admissions to the grounds wag small it looks very muchas though the death knell of conrsing has been- sounded in South Canterbury. Perhaps it seems uncharitable to the promoters and members of the club to say this, but the fact remains that the sport is practically ignored by" the public of Timaru and of course it cannot be expected that a mere handful of enthusiasts can continue providing good stakes if they reeeivia so little encouragement. While (Wishing the club every success one cannot help thinking that such-an unsatisfactory state of affairs cannot long continue.

During the afternoon -three dogs were publicly offered for sale, but failed to find "buyers at reserve prices. These were:-Tui, Rocket and Able Boy. Mr-vKetb (judge) and Mr' Fairhairn (slipper) again carried, out their duties in a satisfactory manner. The following are particulars of the coursing;— FAREWELL STAKE. Again the former took the lead, but allowed Come Again to take a go-by before the hare was reached. Both dogs took turns out of the hare," but though the fawn bitch killed Manxman/had made more points. Able Boy teok the lead from .Lady Komp. The latter fell in her first turn, and overran the hare in another, but her liubcequenl working earned' her points enough to win the course. Second Round. Daylight beat Merman. Even Load beat Coquette. Manxman, beat Lady Romp. Daylight led oft' from the slip and ran straight in and, tripped up the quarry, allowing Merman to smell fur.
