':■ NEW PLYMOUTH, August 20. The Taranaki- Wellington match was played! to-day under somewhat advents weather conditions. The ground w.ib a trifle heavy, and occasional showers fell during the first spell. Tlio game ended in a victory for Taranaki by 15 joints ita nil. Throughout Taranaki had the_ upper hand due in a. great extent the , accurate fielding, line and centre, kicking of the local backs, who despite a wot ball 'never failed to field the ball or misplaced a kick. In this respect the Wellington backs were inferior, but. much missed the services of Roberts, who was incapacitated.' The local forwards played a superior game in the loose dribbling, and following in s. line style, although in close and line out/ play Wellington had the advantage. The local line, however, was never after the first five minutes' seriously endangered, and the full back was pever called :on .fr» take a man. In the first. spell Mynofb scored, Cameron goaling and the ■'spell ended 5 ifo nil. In the second half Wellington was almost continually on the defence. The junior and third grade competitions were resumed and advanced a stage ytvJterday afternoon, and a match' between Celtic, the'winners of the fourth grade, and the Southern - Cross third: grade ' B team (Ashburton) was also played.*- Tile following are results: — Celtic v. This game was rplayed'on No. 1 Athletic Ground; it was nob con--spicuoUK for either good or fast play, : es- ■ pecially as far as the visitors were concerned, they being outclassed throughout'. In the first spell Crimmins scored - a .try, and-the same player and D. Allan,. Mulcaliy, O'Brien and' Jubb made' tries 'in the second spell, but, owing to the strong wind prevailing, none were converted. The game thus ended: Celtic 18, Southern Cross 0. ' * JUNIORS. Star v. Temuka (Mr J. Thomson; referee). These teams met at the Atliietic Grounds and fought out a hard battle. In the first spell there was some tight play, Star having on the whole' a decided advantage, but 'the Temuka defence was: too good to. allotf of any score being, made. Temuka played better in the second spell, and at one time had their opponents -jammed back on the line. Star, however, broke away, and shifted play forward'for a time, but towards; the conclusion of the game were being pressed back. '. Just-in. the last minute W. Spillane secured penalty goal, making Temulia the' Victoria ■ by 3 points to nil. Zingari v. Pleasant Point (Mr -..Halstead, referee). This game was v played: at Pleasant Point on a wet arid , heavy ground, which spoilt any , chance for ".a good back game. , In the.forward division < the teams were evenly matched' and... at times play was fast. For Zingari Darroch secured a penalty goal and He'ggarty, making a pretty run arid dodging, several backrankers, scored a tay, which Darroch failed to convert. Besides these two players Moore, Maslin, McWhirter and Mitchell showed up well, .also Thomas, Booth and Coles on the : Point side. The final score was—-Zingari. 6,;; Point nil. .
