LOST BABY.
FOUND ASLEEP AT CRYSTAL PALACE. A baby elephant was lost in the early hours recently at the Crystal Palace, and was hunted in the grounds for five hours. The little elephant had with its mother jUstl arrived front Ceylon as additions t° Mr Leadbetter's menagerie at the Palace. The animals came from, Liverpool accon," panied by a keeper named Harry Foster, but owing to the enormous holiday traffic on the Midland Railway their arrival at, Sydenham was somewhat delayed. At about Lls, the two elephants were being escorted across the Palace grounds by the keeper who conveyed theni t° London and whom they know very well and another keeper named Frank Hatt. Suddenly the big animal started running, and the two keepers immediately pursued it, thinking that the little elephant would follow. On looking round they were surprised to discover that " Baby" had bolted in another direction and was soon completely lost hi the darkness. The. big elepkantf was secured and safely housed, and then the two keepers, "with some of the watchmen, started on a hunt, which lasted for several hours. For some time iti was believed that the little beast must have got out of the grounds, but) at 6 o'clock ho was found fast asleep by the side of one of the "extinct" animals down near the lakes.
