WOMAN IN WHITE.
ROTTEN ROW SENSATION.
A sensation was caused in Rotten -Row, London, on the morning of May 16th., by the appearance of a iady riding a fine Russian grey horse with a white mane and a long white tail. It was the dress which created the sensation. She was wearing what is known as a Directoire costume of white broadcloth, fitting ■tight, to .the figure, the dress being slashed open on the left side up to the knee, with passementerie straps and white pearl buttons down the front. The corset coat was open in front with a white lace yolk, and had short sleeves. The small jewelled hat. was'trimmed with three large white ostrich feathers, on the left side, while the aider's fair hair was worn in rolls, parted on the left. High white leather boots and white silk tights completed this remarkable costume. There was a large crowd of fashionable folk in the Row, and the lady's appearance attracted everyone's attention. Seen on her return the rider, who is La Bellfe Titcomb, a very clever and daring equestrienne, now appearing at the Hippodrome, said that she did not see why, if ladies wore white dresses in summer when walking, they should not do so 011 •horse back.
•" I left the Hippodrome," said Mile. Titcomb, "at about 11 o'clock, in the morning on Zampo (that's my horse's name) and rode along Piccadilly, to the great astonishment of eveiyone, who stood still and stared at me. Even the people in carriages and cabs stood up to look at me. When I cantered into the park the policemen touched their helmets and stopped the traffic for me. They must have thought I was the German Empress. . " I rode in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris in the same costume, and it was copied by many fashionable ladies.- The Bois is very nice, but ma foi, your Rotten Row is. beautiful. As a French girl I admire your beautiful London, .and 'if the people were as enchanted with me as I was with Rotten Row) no wondejr one v gentleman who stared at me nearly fell off his horse."
