St. Andrews. He proposed to make arrangements shoitly inr carting tlieiu. A committee of the Council had visited .Howell's road and would report tlteieon. The Council's teams were regr.-iding the recently acquired road through Cock's properly. Fresh tenders wen- received for fnniui'.ioii and metalling Lyalldale and Pareora roads. The Council's teams were expected every day in this riding to form and repair tile side track etc. °in old Blue Cliffs road anil other sections. .Some contracts in O'-aio. Makikihi and Waihao ridings were not yet started, the contractors being engaged in harvc-fiii". An estimate was given of the cost- of lowering an excessively steep and narrow gradient on road appioaching in Ambrose Jackson's. Satisfactory progress was being made with contracts in Deep Creek riding, iron rails had been purchased and delivered on the site for a bridge over Waimate Creek on Knoltingley Park road. The Council's team had done mctalJinrr repairs between Quinn's and Makikibi riverbed, and cleaned tip Mater channels and ditches in main road in St. Andrews township. During the month an examination had been made of the works in the Levels County in respect, of which, the Wainiatc Council contributes a. portion of the cost, and all accounts submitted had since been perused and certified to for payment. , , It was agreed thai, the engineer should arrange with some one to do the work at Ambrose Jackson's, the job being too small for tendering. Mr Smillie reported complaints about the rough state of the road under contract 624, Glenavy, left unfinished.—The Council resolved "to call upon the contractor to complete the work within a fortnight, or thev will put on men at his expense. Three orders to clear gorse- off roads were made.

The report of n committee on Howell's road, Upper Pareora, gave particidars of the 7J miles of the branch road. The. only shingle near the road was inferior, and carting from the Pareora would be costly. The committee recommended that the terraces be prospected to discover a better class of shingle if possible: and that in ensuing years a fair proportion of the moneys available for this district be expended "on metalling the stee2>er grades, about 45 chains in all.—Report- approved. A report by another committee on the acquisition of a gravel reserve on McC'ulloch'.s road was held over, one member not having signed it. A letter offering a reserve was also held over. SMALL BIRDS.

The Waimate Borougn Council wrote that they could not see tiieir way to increase their offer of 1 per cent, on tha Council's vxpenditure on the destruction of smalt bilds.

The clerk stated that the total expenditure tliis financial year would probably be about £1000; but most of it was clue tu last season. So far this season there had been only 15,400 eggs and heads brought in, against 192,000 last year. The price this year had been reduced by half so that the expenditure would be further reduced. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr D. Brown, Cave, inquired who was responsible for clearing gorse on his side of his frontage road, the gorse having crossed from the opposite side of the road. He had no fence at. all on his side.---The clerk-had sent Mr Brown a copy of a judicial decision on a similar case. The Waimate A. and P. Association and Waimate Racing Club applied for the opening up of the" road between the slaughterhouse road and the racecourse and that it be 2' u fc ' ll order. The engineer said the length is about 25 chains, and it woidd have to be cleared of gorse. It would cost £5 or £6.—This -sum, to be spent. Mr N. Francis offered to provide and ertct the supports for a motor-car bridge over Waimate creek, if the Council would provide decking. Mr Studholme and the ■engineer said the proposed bridge would D_- Vciy useful to the public saving a half-miie detour when the creek was high, —engineer to report. The Council's solicitors advised generally on the Council-.* poweis to recovv. damages for injury to roads by tractioi, engine traffic, and specifically on certain c;i«s described to them. —A good deal o; consideration- was given to the facts oi. these. ca.<*» in committee, and the subject was then deferred till next meeting for a leport by the engineer on the amount, of evidence available. MISCELLANEOUS.

Rev. A. S. .Morrison was reappointed th.- Council's representative on tiie Waimate High .School Board, and Mr A. Walker as a. manager of the Waimate Technical Class-as.

Mr J. C. Armstrong was granted leave to erect a owing gate on a road at 'lakuu. Three cases of .scarlatina, and one ol tuberculosis of the spine were reports.

Mr H. J, Johnson waited on the Council to urge his repeated' request for a slock-bruige over a bad creek crotsiug on Springbank road. Mr Lyall differed lrom Mr Johnson as to the quantity ol water in the creek. The engineer gave a report and estimate some time ago, and these were turned up. —It wa,s agreed that Rhodes, Studholme, Lyall, and Hardie should inspect and reporr.

Mr Hart asked that- the engineer report on tome work asked for by Mr Logan on Station P<ak road.

Mr Studholme stated that the Hunt Club had selected a site to which to shift the kennels rind they wished the Council to approve i.f it.
