On November: Ist, 1906, .the Greymouth Borough Council .took over the books and' effects from -the - old Library Committee arid re-openeel -,in the handsome ; suite' of rooms, in -the library wing of the .Municipal', Buildings, which .w'ere subsidised to the extent of £2250 'by- a donation from Mr Andrew • Carnegie,. the t-otal cost of the-said wing,being;;£4ooo. . Under, twelve: months of Municipal control the Libraiy and-, reading rooms, says the " Greymouth Star,", have ; prospered exceedingly, and are well patronised by the public in every ■ department.. During the year a large order for. standard works duly came to hand, and were shelved in good condition, and every month the leading new novels: are purchased locally, thus providing all classes of readers with literature to their taste.: As a result the :subscribers , now- number 170, against,.7o when the Council-took charge. In the general reading room all' the leading; dailies and weeklies in the : Dominion are to be found on the desks.. as - well as the principal British and Commonwealth journals. The library and ladies' reading' rooms are a'so. well provided with magazines and light literature, and they are. well filled, and highly appreciated by the reading public. Two young' ladies act. .as librarians. - The-"Star" says that in/accordance with the agreement with Mr Carnegie, a frlsh supply of books "must be obtained every year, so that- intending ./Subscribers'; call rest assured that during the- coming year there will rba no lack of reading matter provided fo'r them.
