The Union asked IV.r increases in tlvf- rate of pay of from 10 to 20 per Wint. wall preference to unionists when they are available and capable of doing the work. Evidence was given that the cost, of living and hou.«e r-entt hhd increased, and several -workeis stated that, their ■earnings averaged but little '•oyer. £2 per; \r.-ek.' For the employers it' was stated that, although' in inetancfG the rate of wages was higher before- the award than, under it. yet- since the award came into force, owing to th?. increase of trade, the men had famed more money.
