Mr Tate, the Victorian Director of Education, who is at present in Europe, expresses himself as being greatly impressed with the excellent characteristics of the buildings which accommodate the primary schools in the cities of Germany. Special mention i£ made of the school at Numb erg, which was built at a cost of £43,000, accommodating 2000 pupils. In the basement a gymnasium and shower baths were provided. The. corridors and classrooms. were spacious, and there were no corners or ledges on which dust could rest. Everything was rounded. The desks were carefully adapted to the raize of the children who used them, and were screwed to the floor so that, they could bs tipped over to enable all the rooms to be thoroughly swftpt. The floors in all the classrooms were covered with linoleum. Including the basement, the building is four storeys high.
