Tlie "Telegraph" says that for the first time for many years trouble has been recently experienced in the use of t.tinted butter boxes made of New Zealand white pine. How "they got into use has not been ascertained; the indications are either the carelessness of the bnsmaker or that the supply of first-ilass pine is running out. The timber develops a strong smoky scent which permeases and ruins the flavour of the butter. Some is 1 so affected as to .be ' unsaleable even for pastry purposes. The difficulty is ggravated in cases where factories obtain boxes from Sydney in "nests.' I'ycked ' in this way the timber sweats, and the objectionable taint is intensified.
