November 4. : The Unionists won upwards -of .134 t=eats in the English and Welsh municipal elections. A g.ieat majority of their victories was in boroughs wliicli elected Liberal: members to the House, of Commons. < . The Liberals won 22 seats, the Labour candidates 22, the Independents four, and the Socialists five. Socialists eeeking reelection in four boroughs were oursied and severely defeated in 27, wheie -they -attempted to displace councilors who were seeking re-election. ilrs (Dr.) Garrett Anderson and live" other ladies were elected municipal councillors. ' The "Chronicle" says that the primai'y cause' of the Unionist victories' was fear of Socialists and secondarily of the Anglicans and Roman Catholics assailing .the Liberals: It would not-be a bad thing for .liberalism - if the. 'Socialists continued their Israelite tactics, In indiscriminately attacking both political parties.
