COST OF LIVING.
THE NEW DUTY OX BOOTS. Mr S. Anderson- informed a "Herald" reporter on Saturday that .the new tariff on boots which took effect on Friday, will, on the whole affect, manufacturers in-'New- Zealand favourably. The price of .high-grade boots will oe . about • the same as formerly, but the tailiff will prevent the cheap and-inferior classes coming into the country in such large consignments as hitherto. This as seen by the fact that a duty of 1» 6d and 15 per cent. on a pair of 175.. or 18s boots is not so much as the same duty on an 8s pair. The increase on lower and medium, sorts has already borne fruit, for a- large' [Australian firin are about to start a factoxy en Wellington where they will specialize) in women's and children's cheap boots and shoes. Mr Andeiuon said that New Zealand factories had never gone in for lower and medium- grades because they could nob produce these so cheaply as English and American firms, so that, the new tariff will effect a larger volume of business in these grades. Competition was very keen and the prices to' the public would be kept down to a reasonable* ponnt.
