PROPOSED NEW ROAD.
ACROSS THE BAY. At Friday's meeting of the Harbour Board Mr J. Fraser, member for Temuka Road district and Borough suggested that the Board should, make a new and useful approach to , the harbour, for -wheeled traffic, by forming a road across Carolin? Bay, from the northern leclamation to the viaduct at the foot of Wai-iti. Road. Mr Fraser said he had no desire to interfere -with the beautifying of the; Bay, and he did not think the road he . proposed would do so. It would be a great advantage to the harbour to" have a direct access from; that side, and a very great advantage to farmers carting to the beach stores from the north side of the town, .';aving them to pull up Melville Hill and the stoppage at Strathallan. Street crossing. The southern farmers had an easy access to the stores by Heaton Street, and the northern farmers wsie entitled to the same convenience if it could b; got. By passing under the viaduct they would be quite clear of the railway. The road could be taken quite outside the present beautified ground, and there would be any amount of room left for bathing, tfr.could see nothing against it, and it would not be costly to bank up a- roadway with shingle, with a rubble facing to it. He thought it would- improve the Bay to have a -load made through it, and the Mayor could Ihen, on .receiving any notability, drive him quite round the harbour. The main argument, however, was that the northern community had a right to .the convenience that' such a road would provide. He was inclined to move that the engineer be instructed to report on the cost of such a woi k.
The chairman deprecated haste in the matter, and Mr Fraser did not pre.s his proposal. " - ..-■".■.
