A. young carpenter named Walter Andrews was ascending the scaffolding at the Prince of Wales Hot*!, when he let go lus hold and fell, striking some timber The base of his skull was fractured, and he died this afternoon. DEFECTIVE MACHINERY. NAPIER, October 20. At the inquest on the body of Michael Henry, vrho died as the result of an accident when working on the Harbour Board's dredge, it was ascertained that part of the machinery which had broken had been made locally, , and had never been tested by the Harbour Board. A verdict was returned - it.hub death had resulted from the accident, and the jury added a rider that it was advisable that in future the Harbour-Board should test tho strength of all chains and similar machinery used by them. A CURIOUS COLLISION. CHEISTOHURCH, October 19. Tho 1.15 tram to Sumner to-day, which consisted of an electric car and three trailers, was run into by -a. traction engine at Woolston, considerable damage resulting. None of the passengers were injured. A LACERATED HAND. Mr Frank Duncan, the harbourmaster's chief coxswain, met with a painful accident on Saturday morning. He was engaged in mooring the steamer Gamphill to. the. main ■wharf, being on the vessel and standing by the aft winch. The winch, was winding in chain connected to s a. hawser, when Mr Duncan by some means had his right hand caught between the chain and the drum of the winch., causing the flesh to be badly lacerated ; but fortunately no bones were broken. No fewer than twenty-five stitches were used by Dr Bowe, who attended Mr Duncan, in repairing the damage. It -will probably be at least a month before the injuries, which are very painful, will be healed! , The sympathies of a large circle of friends are extended to Mr Duncan during his enforced retirement.
