Latest reports from -Newcastle state that altogether an area of between 40 and 50 acres is affected■ by■ the "creep," though in only a portion is.the subsidence really serious. : houses are within the area. Amongst :the premises damaged. are , the Congregational -and Catholic churches,' the Methodist : Mission Hall, and the palatial residence of Mr A. F. Hall, adjoining Mr Wood's. Last night the reservoir on the liO'l, with n holding cajmcity of 200,000 gallons, began leaking into,the old workings below. The mam reservoir, however, is intact, and the city engineer repbrted last night that .he. anticipated no danger to. ;it. .'•"'•■ - .The estimates of damage are very wide, ranging from £40,000 to £IOO,OOO. • The residents in some of the damaged houses had rather an exciting experience '; but no one was injured.
