BOXING.
THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP. W. Squires, y the Australian champion, who went to America recently in order to contest, the world's championship, was matched against T. Burns, and the two men met on Thursday last. The fight, however, was of very brief duration, lor a cable message received at Ghristchurch from Sydney states that Bums won in <\ n seconds. The compact between the boxers and the. promoters provided for Marquis of Queensbery rules, with a 45-rourid limit. It was agreed that Burns was to receive 8000 dollars whether he won or lost, while. Squires' portion of the gate was to be 60 per cent, or .three-fifths'of the gross takings if he won, and 40 per osut. if he lost. In.the event of the fight drawing' more than 30,000 ' dollars, the basis of division was to be increased by 5 per cent. James Jeffries, the retired champion, was to act as referee, and receive a fee of 1000 dollars. Squires was greatly fancied among supporters of boxing in the colonies, and his defeat came as a great surprise to sporting men. ■
