In accordance' with the decision of a -mass meeting .at Johannesburg, a general strike was ordered for to-day,, but the working mineis 'disregarded' the order. THE GOAL-LUMPERS' STRIKE. *, Received 11.17 p.m.,' July sth. ' SYDNEY, July 5. The conference resumed'to-day. After some fencing regarding , the questicui of working with, certain .non-union fprpbren. the chairmen of the '.Lumpers' Union declared that if;the' .Conference proved- abortive, the responsibility 'would rest on ths ihoui'ders of the employers.' The employers' reply to the men's demands, was then read. It stated that-. the steameollier owners and stevedores association had decided that till foremen .shall be .appointed, by and -be absolutely .under the jurisdiction' of the employers, and cea.s'.to be. .member.4 of the 'Coal Lumper:' Union. .Thiy-declined, to grant' any increase for -nighty oyertime, but would pay 2s 3d per ho.ur. for Saturday afternoon. They promised to' restaiet Sunday work as much as possible, compatible with the tarrying on ,of work in port. Tliey acceded to tb.ii request that' ho work should ba done during .meal hours, but'decline;! to grant full rates for time men were kept ,waiting, but ■if ordered' to a job whip ; i doe's hot eventuate, were willing to giva each disappointed man ss, and wliero or-, dier.ed to a job which does not, commence for an hour, the rats of pay for hourly , wage until' work, begins, or ths,.men are s'ont homo. They agreed-to make weight yards the limit for two carriers instead of the seven asked for. If these proposals are accepted tin agreement is to be drawn up asking the Arbitration Court to-vary the awards in accordance therewith. The conference adjourned to allow the lumpers' 'delegates to consider the proposals 'On re-assembling the employers' spokesman in reply to a que'-tion said that, these 1 were the employers' final proposals. >The Conference then adjourned till Monday; The delegates hi the meantime will: place •' the employers' proposals bsfore the .
