RULE OF THE ROAD.
RIGHT OR LEFT. At the meeting of the Waimate County Council yesterday, Mr Lyall asked for information regarding the-Rules of, the Road, especially with regard to led horses. The other day he was following a man who was leading a mare with. foal. Meeting a motor car he moved to the right side of the road, to keep the led horse away from the car. The car driver kept to the left side, nearly ran into the horseman, and condemned him for a fool for not knowing the rules of the road. A little further on he met another motor car, and going to the left side was nearly run into again, and was again condemned for a fool for his ignorance of the right side of the Toad. Mr Lyall desirecj to> know which of the car drivers was right. The engineer said the Motor Car Byr.inv provided that a horseman could indicate by hand which side he preferred, and that the car shOidd always take the dangerous side of a road. The rule was that a person leading a horse should keep between the horse and any vehicle or machine.
Mr Walker said the rule -when leading entires was for them to keep to the right. He had once been capsized by a man who was riding on the left while Ms led horse was on the right side of the road. _ > The engineer said confusion was introduced by the rule for people on footpaths in town*" keep to the rieht." It would be a srood thing if the rules could be mfl.de the wim •.- It was perfectly plain why !<-d horse* should go to the right: if they did i". t the leader would not have full control over them.
Mr Rhodes -wished there was a rule dire-'ing which side of the road a mob of sheep had a right to, when being met or passed ; and that drovers' were required to send a dog through to clear away. Nine-tenths of them had not the courtesy to do that. The Council agreed to ask their solicitor for a statement of the " rule of the mad.'
