Boyer, manager of the Waihi Workers' Co-operative Society, made a determined attempt at suicide, being found on Saturday night with three bullet wounds in his head. He used a toy revolver. Two of the bullets werei extracted. He confessed to having taken strychnine prior to the act of shooting, and it is- assumed that he took an overdose. He is reported to be sinking. PALMERSION NORTH, May 27. A young man, named Ernest Wheeler, was drowned in the Manawatu river, near Ashhurst, "this afternoon. An inquest wag held to-day touching the death of John Eeenev, a flaxmiller, who crushed a finger in a stripper at Kairanga, on May 17th, underwent an operation for the removal of the same on Saturday morning, and died under chloroform; The jury's verdict was that death was,due to paralysisof the heart due-' to chloroform-poisoning, every care being fakeo in tie administration. BLENHEIM, May 27. The Blenheim Rifles >and footballers systematically searched the, mud flats and lagoons for a trace' of "'the missing- man, William Preston, yesterday, and found a hat, since identified-as Ereston's, on a spit in the upper "lagoon.'" Tliis is taken as conclusive '.evidence- that Preston nist his death by drowning. The police are now dragging for the body. WALMATE, May 27. Mr Lomas, of Waihao'- Forks, died yesterday from the. effects of his fall from the vehicle in the accident which occurred when he was driving to the upper mine on Friday last. DUNEDtN, May 27. Ah Kee, aged 48, was found hanging dead in a hut at Waitahuna yesterday. GORE, May 27. A narrow eiseape from a drowning accident involving the loss of a three-horsa team and the narrow escape of tlie driver, a man named Arthur James, occurred at Gore, to-day. In attempting to ;ford tha Waikaka river, which is in flood, the team gob into difficulties, and ilia''driver in an unsuccessful attempt 'to cut jthe shafter free nearly lost, his life, but managed to struggle to the bank. The team of horses was valued at more than £IOO.
INVERCARGILL, May 27. Three boy& went out duck shooting- in the estuary" yesterday. They "planted" at daylight, and when the tide rose were cut off, and had to stay all day in tho water, which at its height was up to their necks. They got homa much exhausted.
