Bent, Premier of Victoria, in referring- tq the enthusiastic demonstration, in Mr Batlia's honour, declared that Australians . would not have, shouted themselves hoarse and fluttered •white handkerchiefs,' but (would have long remembered the ".sorrowing widows, the wooden legs, the armless- men, in their midst.' He hoped )tliat .Mr Botha, would keep his promises, and that the Transvaal would prove in the future as good a. friend to the Motheland as Australia had been. Mr Bent was referring to 3VIr _ Botha's "kiddie, guard of■ honour,;' declaring .that thousands of Australian cadets were willing to show the stuff tliey - were made of if the Empire needed .their: services, when the children, sang "Rule, Britannia." LONDON, May 25. • Tliree thousand eight hundred _ schools participated in Empire Day rejoicings, which, in London and tie provinces, were unprecedentetd in enthusiasm and scope. NORFOLK ISLAND, May 25. The Empire Day functions consisted of unfurling the flag by the: Cthief Magistrate in the presence of the school children and adults, and a recaption and entertainment to children at Government House. MELBOURNE, May 25. It is estimated that 170,000 children participated in the Empire. Day celebrations. . 'SYDNEY. May 25. ill* Bruce Smith and. Mr T. H. Kelly, members of the Assembly, o-n Empire* Day made speeches urging the necessity of continuing the naval subsidy. Per Press Association. HAMILTON; May 25. At the Empire Day, celebrations the Mayor presented the Humane Society's bronze medal and -certificate to Jas. P. McGarrigle, for rescuing a man named Houghton from drowning in the Waikato river on December 15th.
