were maintained in comparison •with the previous sale. On Saturday the -usual sale of poultry took place. Quotations taken from our auction books road as follows: —Hens, small, Is 3d to Is 9d; ordinary, hi 9d to 2s 6d ; roosters, small, 2s 3d to 2s 9d; targe,- 5s 6d to 4s 3d; ducks, 3s 6d to 4s ; geese, 4s to 4s 6d ; all at per pair. Turkey hens, 4s to 4s 6d. Immediately following the poultry ire offered a quantity of furniture sent in for sale by a. customer, who is leaving the town. The goods were offered without reserve, and consequently sold readily; a few of the sales being : Linoleum £l, 16s, 14s, wash-

stand. 16s; dresser, £1 ss; 4 leather chairs, £2 2s: wicker cliair. 13s; duchess, £2 2s; D.I. bedsteads, £2 2s and £2 10s. Sundries realised excellent prices. At 2 o'clock we offered a large quantity of general drapery. The attendance by this time had become ve-ry large, and bidding for the majority of the goods offered was very kesn. Satisfactory sales w«iv effected, the auction closing at 4 o'clock. The goods brought, as follows:—Men's suits, 18s to 20s ; trousers, 5s 6d to 6> 6d; jerseys. 2s 6d" to 6s; fancy vests, 7s 8s 6d; skirts, 4s 6d to 6s: felt hats, 3s 3d; caps, Is; braces. Is: skirts, 2s to 4s. etc.

Business during the week has been exceptionally good, and we report, having disposed of about 15 tons of potatoes, at prices ranging from £3 to £3 7s 6d; also large quantities- of onions, wheat, oats and general produce. We quote as follows: —Potatoes in sack lots) 6s to 10s, according to quality; onions, in small lots, Id per lb, one sack or over |d per lb: wheat, broken, IGs to 12s; whote, 13s to 14s {the demand for fowl wheat during the week has been exceptional); oats, 15s to 14s; swedes, 3s; carrots, 3s 6d at per sack. Bacon, prime, B£d to 8?d per lb, with a ready sale; fruits—bananas 9s, Island oranges Bs, Queensland pines lis 6d, per case; tomatoes, sauce. desserts, 2jd. The. season for the latter has now closed. Following are a few of the sales made during the week:—Wilting table, £3; D.I. bedstead. £3 ss: dinner set. £2; cheval, £5 lCs, duchesses, £4, £2 15s and £2 ss.

BESWICK STREET ROOMS.

C. Jonas and Co. report for the past •week as follows : —Business all through has been very brisk, and we disposed of a large quantity of goods privately. In most cases there have been better prices. Potatoes' are arriving in large quantities, and while no big lines are selling, well-filled bags are bringing good prices. Up-to-dates seemed to be most enquired after, but Denrents are not so much sought after. Wheat continues to advance and the quantity we sold has brought good prices. Fowls were about on par with late rates with the exception of prime sorts of roosters and ducks. Oats are dearer. Pigs sold in advance of last week, and competition was keener. Onions are selling well at prices a, little in advance, of our last quotations. Fruit lias shown an improvemsnt, and the demand for the past week was exceptional. We disposed of over 200 cases. Apple 3 advanced from Id to 2d per lb, and tomatoes Id. Pears also sold weli. On Thursday we held a successful sale I of building timber, roofing iron, etc., for ;Mr Xesbit, at Church street. There was | a- large attendance, and every lot met ready competition. Iron realised from Is 9d to Is. lid per sheet; timber from 3.s 6d to 6s 6d per lot; hut 20s; doors from 5s to 4s each.. There was an exceptionally large entry of poultry at the rooms on Saturday, considering the time of the year: over 3CG head of all descriptions were entered and we quote: —Hens (small) Is to 2s,"larger 2s 5d to 3s 3d, roosters (small! Is 9d to 2s 9d, prime 5s 3d to 4s fid, ducks (small) 2s to 2s 6d, prime 3s 6d to 4s sd, pullets 2s to 3s 6d, turkey hens 5s to 7<, gobblers 15s to 16s, geese 4s to 4& 6cl (all at per pair) pure breds 2s to 2s 6d each. Our varding of pigs comprised 14 and of these we sold 2 .at 13s, 2 at 12s fid, J. at 10s 6d, 6 at 10s, 1 at 8s each. Potatoes : Derwents 5s to 7s, Up-to-dates 8s to £s per sack: per ton, Denrents £o to £5 2s 6d, tead potatoes ss, pig potatoes 3s 3d (all at per sack). Onion:, Id per lb, cabbages 2s to 2s 5d per sack, wheat (whole) 13s to 14s, broken lis 6d to 12s Sd, oats 12s per sack, carrots 2s 3d to ss, swedes 3s to 3s 3d, hams 6d to &Jd, bacon 4£d to sd, prime hams 7d to Bd, apples (cooking) ljd to 2d, dessert 2d to 3d, pears 2d per lb, quinces 2s 6d to 5s per case, tomatoes 2d to oranges 7s 6d to 8s 9d per case, kits apples Id pel lb. A number of canaries and love birds sold as follows: Canaries 10s to j2s 6d per pair, love birds 2s 6d to 3s per pair; sundrkk all realised full auction rate?.

The Xew Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd.. have received the following cable from their London office in regard to-the frozen meat market:- — '"The frozen mutton market has a harder tendency; spot market for frozen lamb has advanced, and supplies of beef (sides) being light, the market is firmer with a fair demand."
