SHOOTING
GOVERNMENT MEDALS. The Timaru Infantry Corps fired yesterday atteruoon for the Government medal for the South Island, and the silver medals for the Canterbury district, Captains McGee and Foster coming down from Christ-church to supervise the shooting. The weather was peri'ect for shooting, almost dead calm, and the target as clear as if but a few yards away.' Nevertheless the top score f(tiled to equal that of last year—s4. Only fourteen men turned up out of a larger number qualified to shoot. The conditions were: seven shots at 200 yards at disappearing head and shoulders,, exposed 4 seconds, score. 2 for hit in the black •, seven .'hots at 500 yards, at upright black band 3 feet wide, score 2 for the black, 1 for the white; seven shots at 700 yards, bull's eye, score 4, 3, and 2; total possible 56.
