HUNTING.

MR JAMES CAMPBELL'S MEET

Yesterday the hounds were met at Mr James Campbell's, Kingsdown, by a well mounted field who thoroughly enjoyed the day's sport. It was a hot day and the going still very hard, no ram having fallen since last week's fixture. Nevertheless the first hare found soon after throwing' off in a. grass paddock near tho homestead gave all, a very good little run and made it evident that the scent was .better than might be expected considering the unfavourable conditions. 'She took the field over on to Mr S. Ree's farm and then turning right handed hugged the fences until she got back on to Mr Campbell's land; then going through the fences, and bearing left-handed shs managed to get rid of' her pursuers. The Huntsman cast, back and made wide casts in -different directions but without success. Another hare found on Mr Campbell's took the field over a couple of stiff gorse fences, then turning left-handed across Campbell's road on to Mr F. Le Cren's farm gave them a double to get over winch was very well taken by a good number of straight goers. Over two more gorse fences then back again over the same brought the field back to a gully where the 1 Master was of opinion the hare had laid up; and correctly so, as when working slowly up the gully the hounds refound the'hare and hunted her out of Mr Le Cren's property on to Campbell's road where thev lulled. Scent soon began to fail and although there/was no scarcity of hares they ran hounds out of scent in no time so that although nothing in the shape of a long run could be recorded, all were kept on the).move and had some short sharp bursts over very good huntino- country and fairly stiff in places. Perhaps tlie best of these was after a hare found on Mr Bee's land who made south over a, paddock of Mr J. K, David's on's then turned right-handed and took the field fairly fast over two paddocks, but was eventually lost on Munro a road. Another fairly fast spin from close to the back of the homestead across the road into Mr Munro's. and down the steep cliff on' to the flat below before losing the hare was the wind up of a very good day's sport, especially good considering the very unfavourable/ hunting conditions. On returning to the homestead Mrs Lampbell's hospitality was most welcome • and very much appreciated. Feeling, much refreshed bv the same all. were inclined to hurry away home as it looked as if a heavy downpour was coming from the south, but before leaving *ne Master on behalf of the field 'thanked Mi Campbell for the sport they had enjoyed, end Airs Campbell for so kindly entertaining them. Hearty cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Campbell at the call of the Master, and three more for the family. The next meet will be at Ar°whenua $> 11.30 a.m. on Friday, May 24th Mr E. Kelland having kindly consented to postpone his meet, which was to have been on May 23rd, as the 24th has been declared "a public holiday.
