VOLUNTEERING.
SOUTH CANTERBURY MOUNTED RIFLES. . The South Canterbury Mounted Rifles held their annual dinner and distribution of prizes in the Arcade Cafe last evening. Captain Gresson presided and about bO members of the corps and several other guests were present. After full justice had been done to the dinner, the proceeding took the form of a smoke concert, and the prizes won during the year were presented by Caplain Gresson. The following is the prize ■ list: —Private Hurdley—squadron belt and gold medal, Ist in" championship, Ist in fourmatch, aggregate:; one first and one second prize. Corporal Parry —2nd in championship ; three firsts and two seconds. Sergeant Smith —3rd in championship ; two firs's and two seconds. Q.M. Sergeant AVilliam:—lst in 2nd class . aggregate; 2nd in four-match agregate; three firsts and one second. Private Mitchell —Mrs Whittaker's cup; 2nd in 2nd! c l a ss aggregate; two firsts and one: second. Corporal Rutherford —Major Lindsay's aggregate tropin-: 3rd in 2nd clare aggregate ; one first and one second. Sergeant But-fher-—One first and two seconds. Private McLean—One first and two seconds. Corporal. Pringle—One- first and one 'ecencl. Private Lamb—First prize (recruits). Private Partridge—One first and, nnsi second. Lieut.-Colonel Bond and Private Orbell —Two - c econd prizes each. Ex-Q.M.S. Whittaker and Bugler Sundb<vnj—Ore second prize each. .Messrs EI worthy Err*!.' r—>' for the Lloyd-Lind-say competition was won bv Sergeant Smith, Corporal Rutherford, Private: McLean and Private Hurdley. Mr F. C. Watson's prize for best atendance at pnfade? was won by Bugler Sundborn (who had missed only one parade in three years).
A long toast list was gone through during ' the evening, and among these honoured were:—"The Army, Navy and "Volunteers," proposed by Mr F. C. Watson and responded to by Captain Foden ; " The donors of prizes" proposed by Lijutenan*-. Bisset and responded to by Messrs Cray, Godfrey and • ETworthy;.
