SYDNEY, May-7. The barquei Northern Clnef, which ■ left Newcastle on April 30th for Auckland, put into Sydney to-night in distress. During a heavy gale off the coast, the seas swept the * deck and flooded the cabin. The captain and mate, who were below at the time, had an exciting experience in getting free of the wreckage. As the vessel had sustained other damage, the captain decided to put in for overhaul. NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 7. As a result of the enquiry into the stranding of the steamer Inveran, the Court held that tiro master of the. ship was guilty of an error of judgment, in not paying out more cable, and that the third officer was negligent in not looking after the wafoty of the ship, especially as he was welL acquainted with Wellington harbour, and that he ought to< jhave paid out more, chain on both anchors; that tlin chief officer having come; on deck, and having taken charge of the paying out of the chain, ought to have given the shin more cable, and not to have left the deck before takinnr steps to aisc?r(-iin whether or not the ship had moved her position. The 'Court ordered the certificate of the third officer to be suspended for one month.. Counsel for Captain Marshall pointed oH that, there w-is no warn inn - -in the " New Zealand " Pilot" about Wellington harbour. The president renli?d that the Court had not lostsight of that fact. Had there been a wnrnimj, the Court might have dealt otherwise.
