SOUTH SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The mon.hly meeting of the South Lchool committer was held last evening. Present:—Mesrs G. J. Sealey (chairman), K. Irwin, D. Moo're, F. Hathaway, W. Ellis,'J. Stewart, J. Melhoy, F. Evans, and A. Eraser (hon. secretary). The chairman said that a conference of the three primary school committee-; had bec-n held, and it had been decided to adopt a verm holiday system, one week's holiday to be given in May, two in September and the usual sis weeks at the end of the year. This would mean lengthening the school holidays by one or t»vo days at most. No holidays would in future be given on special occasions, such as after the inspectors visi s, and the Easter holidays would be confined to Good Fiidav and Easter Mcndav. HEADMASETER'S REPORTT. Mr J. A. Valentine reported that tlio attendance for the period ended May 3rd was 263, a slight dtereise, which was mainly due to the prevalence of whooping cough among ihc infant classes. The roll number, was 316. The infant room might be made much more comfortable by the addition cf perforated zinc or pierced woodwork to the ceiling ventilators in order to break the force/ of tiio downrush ox air. He recommended that ciuarttrly at endance cards be purchased; that broken window-cords be renewed, and a supply of towels obtained for th-& lavatories. * Thanks .to the committee's donation and the liberality of parents, the library now contained about 200 volumes. —The" report was approved and adopted, and the chairman was authorised to make arrangements with the headmaster to i-emedv the defects men.icnsd in the report, " CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J. Imrie, secretary to the Coal Merchants Association, wrote advising thai the Assncja ion had decided to make a rc.iuV.tion of 2s per ton on coal supplied to schools.
