"INCREASED" STATIONYARD CROSSINGS.
To iba Kd&or of the *'Tinir.rn Herald." , Sir, —Judging rrd&r your report of an interview between a deputation and tin Mrm&ber for Railways on the question of getting an overhead traffic bridge from the- tad of Beswick street, perhaps it k< just as well that the agitation is only in tii-i initial stage of discussion. The Minister has plainly indicated that be Icoky upon a bridge there as a subcti- ' lute, for the present level crossing at Strathallan Etrett, as witness his reply f —-"If the bridge were built they would hav.? to use it, however, as the next, thing vottld be to close th™ crossing." The de-' pntatiun did nofr say whe.her they ,\rere asking * a substitute for, or an auxiliary to' our only central level crossing to the harbour, the goods railway hidings, Hayes street, etc., etc. A strange - omisision The climax to the ludicrous suggestion of closing 'vStrathallan street crossing i> to ask the Harbour Board tci subscribe £IO,OOO to attain that object. The Kon. W. Hall-Jone" has a' consid.r- . able Sirn&e of humour despite dairactcrs. I ain, etc.. D. STUART. May 6th, 1907. THE POLICE. To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —Whire arc- the police? They were not in evidence in Stafford street ■ central between 10.10 and 10.40 p.m. -lait Saturday night when a most- disgraceful disturbance was canted by a few drunks, wiLh a crowd of onlookers following them. The disturbance commenced in Stafford sitreet, near the Excehior Hotel, where one of the drunks threw a bottle of gin ati somebody. The squabbling continued up tb» strict, with the crowd following, whin another bottk—lemonade kind -this timt—was thrown with force. This bott!? landnd on, and smashed up, a large plate glass window, value about £l2, but the window being covered with a blind, thasmash was not noticed at the time. However the drunks and the crowd—increasing in, numbers from other pubs—turned into Woollconibe str:e!\ and at the corner of Barnard and Wonllcombe streetr—r»r.lv about c* hundred yards from our police station—a drunken fight took place before a crowd of about 70 onlookers. The fight lasted long enough for ail the polio~i.; Timaru to muster -and do their duty, hut not. even one arrest was ir.adn. Wh.n milking inquiries about the broken win do w on Monday morning the sergeant nf petite■:■ stated he had heard nothing of the i!:~turbancf related above, he being on dn.'v a'J the other end of the town, neither hr:d he swn a report of the matter. It seems incredible that a drunken orgy of this kind could take placv hi J: t 'centre of '? imaru and la=t from 30 to «~5 minntes ar-d the police have no knowledge of the affair. A re-ident in Wooll'combe strc:t, between Barnard and Stafford streets, s'ates these drunken freaks on a smaller Sffdp. than above on Saturday nights are a nuiaaiCc by their regularity. .
