Mr William O'Brien sued the "Freeman's Journal'" at llie<,Limerick Assizes:, for £SOOO damages for- libel on six published statements alleging, inter alia, that he had conspired with the. Earl of- Dunraven. Mr Wyndh.ii]], and Sir A. MacDonnell to destroy tlie Irish 'parly, to create a moderate Unionist centre, parly, and to sell or surrender 18 Nationalist seats. Mr Juslice Johnson, in charging the jury, incidentally remarked thai tlie unmasked conspirator in the case appeared lo be Mr Dillon. The jui.\ found that the Olenroe letter and certain speeches by Mr Dillon and Mr Redmond were libels, and. that the variouscomments were unfair and published in malice. Justice Johnson ■. directed that damage,? must not be contemptuous. The jury awarded a farlhing on each of the six libels. 'Plaintiffs' counsel moves to se! the verdict aside.
