WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council, wasi held yesterday. Pre-_ sent:" Messrsv Milne, Breen, Hart, Rhodes, H. Elwortby, Walker, Lyall and Hardie. ENGINEER'S REPORT. ■ The engineer, Mr C. E. Bremner, reported on -works in hand in the various ridings. In Upper Pareora- riding a 3ft track had been made for Mr T. Pringle's run, to the snowline at base of main ridge leadhn» to Nimrod Peak, as approved by the Land Board. . Repairs had been made to White Rock road;, and drainage wells sunk on Mr A. S. Elworthy's frontage on. limekiln flat. In Lower Pareora contract 564 was finished, and tenders would be submitted for 568, Pleasant Valley road. Access to the beach at St. Andrews was restored for foot and light wheel traffic, but was washed away again by a heavy sea almost immediately. To carry the cutting back into the solid "would cost out of all proportion to the value of the road to the riding as a whole. * Otalo Riding—Mrs Kirk had been informed that her application for survey of road line cou'.d not be entertained by the Council, this being a private matter. A footbridge had been built over Teschemaker's Creek, 42ft long. Two - contracts were advertised for Makikihi riding. Mr Matthews' application for work at .Seafield beach road proved to ba of a private nature, and could tot ibe entertained. In Deep Creek riding, Mr J. I|, Milne's application was described and estimate given. Work asked for by Mr G. Hicks had been done by the Council's men. Mr J. McGratb, Nukuroa, asked for some deep ditch to be piped. The request might be referred to the Land Board if approved. A request for raising of road side at function of Pain«town and.JSook roads was described. . In Waihao BSding,; work was about tobe started on Glenavy roads contract. The Council's men had repaired several roads and were now at the- fordway north of Morven to improve the drainage from Mr M. Crowes section. Carroll's xoad was inspected with one of the riding members, but in view of th* amount of work in hand and contemplated between Glenavy and his property, it was not considered urgent to make further outlay at present.

The permanent location and survey of Shearers' Hiil deviation was- completed and the necessary plans required; rmder the Public Works Act were m coarse of pre■paration. WATER RACES. The report of the lower Waihao Waterrace Committee was read .and adopted,, and resolutions' were passed making the rates for interest (i-sth d) and maintenance id). A rate of l-sth d was also struck for interest in the lower Pareora race district

A letter was received - from- a firm of solicitors at Christchurch, on behalf of Mr Henstridge, of Glenavy, who claimed compensation for injury through; wrongful diversion of a creek, and gave notice of an injunction to prevent a ! continuance of the mischief complained of. The Council's solicitors advised that any action taken 1 be/defended by the Council. The subject of the dispute was' discussed for some time in committee, and it was decided to refer the lawyers' letters to the Water-race Committee, and on receipt of their reply ■•&'■ committee of the Council will further consider the matter. TENDERS. Tenders were received a* follows: Contract 566—O'Neill's road, Makikihi riding i R. White (accepted), £92; A. Shirley and:W. Cochrane,' £ll4 each. No. 567 Highway road, Makikihi: A. Tenders were ordered *o be called for McCuflough's and Mount Harris roads.

JTNANCE. Proposals for readjustment of the riding accounts were adjourned till next meeting, together with the discussion of' the subject of inter-ridihg traffic. In reply to a question, the clerk said* the overdraft on general account was £lß6l. and before the rate was collected in October would be about £SOOO.

The chainnan asked members' opinions regarding the am6unt of rate to be struck, and it was agreed that a three-farthings-rate would be sufficient

The chairman asked members to come to next meeting: prepared with their estimates, that, they might be put through, and Mr Walker hoped they would be prepared to discuss inter-riding traffic, a most important thing. , " Accounts amounting to £1217 17s were passetf for payment.
