The Late R. J. Seddon.
WAIMATE MEMORIALS. Before proceeding with the ordinary business at the meeting of the Waimate Coantv Council yesterday, the chairman, Mr P.* Studholme, said members were fully conversant with the great loss the colony had sustained by the death of the late Premier, who had looked well after the affairs of the colony for many years, and had also taken a great part in Imperial affairs. Mr Studholme moved:—"That this. Council records on its minutes the deep sorrow of its members at the death of the late Premier, the' Bight Hon. K. J. S*ddon, whose public career is a lasting memorial oS distinguished services to the colony, by whose death the country has lost a strenn- " ous leader and the Empire as great statesman. That a copy of this resolution be • seat to the Premier, the Hon. W. HallJones, and to Mrs Seddoa, conveying the Council's sympathy with herself and family in their great bereavement.*-' Mr Walker fully agreed with the motion. Uothing they could say could convey to Mrs Seddonand family the great sorrow felt for them in their bereavement. The colony had suffered a severe loss, as Mr Seddoa was a brilliant statesman, a trne patriot, . .and a© unequalled Imperialist; his humane Jagislatioa had been if immense benefit to the colony, and there was not the slightest doobt that Richard John. Seddiin had left, the world considerably better than heToaad it '■'•"■.'■ The chairman stated that oa behalf of the Council he at once, on receipt of the news of the death of Mr Seddoa, sent a * telegram to Mr Hall-Jones. He also attended the funeral and sent a wreath on fcehalf of the Council. The motion was carried bv members rising. The Waimate Hospital Trustees yesterday passed a resolution expressing deep regret at the death o( Mr Seddon, ~wA of sincere sympathy with Mrs Seddoa and family. At the meeting of the Waimate Borough 'Council on Tuesday evening, it was resolved to. name the public square opposite x the achoot '"Seddoa Square," in memorr of the late Premier, with a suggestion "that later on a memorial 1 gateway might be - erected. •
