Messrs Paul, McNamara and Belloc (Nationalists) preferred Mr Cecil's amende meat. Mr Chamberlain said that the Bill was drawn on wrong lines, and was not amendable. A logical sequence of Mr Cecil's amendment would be the assimilation of country and urban schools. What would the passive resisted then say? Mr Cecil's amendment was- negatived by 340 votes to 237 votes. The result was greeted with Opposition cheers, this being the lowest Ministerial majority in any important division this session. The minority consisted of the Unionists, Bixty-two Nationalists, twenty Independent Labour, and twenty-seven Liberals. The majority included two Catholics (Colonel Herbert and- Mr C'O'Donnell)
