GOLF GOSSIP.
AGE NOT A DISADVANTAGE. It is a very suggestive reflection on recent events {says a Home paper) that so far in this young season 'only two competitions : of the first degree of importance have been played,, the one confined to amateurs and th. other to professionals, and that in each case a man of forty years -of age or more has proved the victor. Lohie, who won the Tooting Bee Challenge Cup, is 43, and now Mr Edward Bkckwell at 40 years of age has won the Silver Cross of the Royal and Ancient Club for the third time. About this time last year, or a little later, everybjpdy was talking about the supremacy of youth.in golf as in all other games, and to tell the truth, even the old men rather liked to hear it, for golfers generally had heard far too much from the ignorant about this being '■ an old man's game." And now the middle-aged golfers are carrying all before them, and the turn of events only proves how this is a game for all. *Mr Edward Blackwell is certainly good enough golfer for anyone,.and will be for some time yet. Two years ago he was in the final for the amateur championship. - The last time the championship was played at Hoylake a veteran golfer in Mr Charles Hutchi=gs" won )the day. .■ - .■' -■-'
