A new development of hydraulic mining in Southern Oregon, might find some profitable applications in New Zealand. Some auriferous gravels were found 430 feet above.the bed of Rogue river. To bring water from the \ river by means of a race would have been too expensive, the country being very bijpken. It was determined to pump water from the river, at the 430 feet Gorge below the deposits. For this purpose <k dam was made, to give a fall of 21 feet to drive" turbines, and these were attached direct to 18 inch "five-step" centrifugal pumps. Each pump weighs 40 tons, and is driven by four turbines. Two pumps are in use, and they deliver over a million gallons of water an hour, supplying four "giant" sluicing nozzles with a pressure of 1601bs per inch. It is intended to add two more pumps, and furnish water for irrigation purposes on the flat lands above the gorge. The cost of running the two pumps is only 2000 dollars a month. Young Robinson: "And this is final, Miss Thomson?"—" Yes," replied Miss Thomson, firmly; "it's final. Shall I Teturn your letters?" "I think you had better," said Robinson, as he rose from his knees. "There are some 'capital things in these letters, and they will do again." For Colds in the He%3 and Influenza, Woods' Great Peppermint Cure, Is 6d and 2a 6d per Bo*«*_/*4.Yt.)
