FOOTBALL.

The following will represent the Zingari Club at Waimate to-morrow.—Smail, McWhirter, Harold, Campbell, Kernick, Darroch, Griffiths, Shields, Stevenson,-Moore, Martin, Wotton, Doyle, Segar, Targuse; emergencies Clarkson, Hilton, Mcllroy, Strutters, Scarf. A meeting oi the Club will be held at Rankin's to-night at 8 o'clock, when all members who are going, to Waimate are requested to attend. The Palmerston correspondent o£ the Otago Daily Times says:—'"The football match between the Palmerston and Waikouaiti Clubs, played at Waikouaiti on Saturday, was responsible for a most disgraceful disturbance, and one that does not reflect any credit on the patrons of football at Waikouaiti. Early ia the second spell, when Palnierston were leading by 6 points to 3, Porteous, of the Palmerston team, in endeavouring to tackle, collided with Aitchison, and the latter, player was winded and temporarily laid out. The crowd, which from the commencement of the game had -been.hostile/to Porteousj rushed into the from, all parts of the and cries of 'KillVhinir ' String him up!' 4 Pull him to pieces !' were heard in all directions. The referee (Mr W.. J. Wilson), who had seen the occur-, rence, expressed the opinion that the acci-,- | dent was TinmtentadßaT/ but"' in* order "to; pacify the crowd, he advised Porteous to, go off. While Porteous was speaking-t<t the referee a spectator struck him in tie face and kicked him. Porteous did retaliate, but quietly left the ground. It might be mentioned that although the local constable saw this unprovoked assault he declined to take any action. More, ho\£ ever, will probably be heard of the matter. Aitchison was not seriously hurt, and was able to resume his usual occupation on Monday. The behaviour of the Waikouaiti spectators was simply disgraceful throughout, and it is with regret that I state that two members of the Borough Council and an ex-Councillor were most prominent in the disturbance, the language used by one of them befcg quite unfit for pub'icution..
