It is the "At Hume" day of the season at - Penrose's, when visitors are asked to pass judgment on the collection ©f goods exhibited. The Premier -was frequently applauded during his speech to Mr Flatman's frieilds at Geraldine, and one of the most emphatic of these marks of approval was called forth by his warning to sUpping rings. "We are not to be played with. I am not in the habit of making statements that I am not to give effect to, and I say that rather than that New Zealand shall be under the heel of any American combine, I will ask. Parliament to give us our own steamersj" and we will take our own produce across the ocean. We could easily chartez 1 all' the steamers we would require, and we will let them see that New Zealand is more than j My shipping combine in the world." , T j le other .evening -a genfJemanof.the cloth, was-.peacefully pedalling . along a lonely road on a mission of charitv, not a hundred' miles from Timaru.- Suddenly his further progress was stopped by a powerful-looking tramp, who requested him, to dismount, .and then, in. that soothing Tray that bullies generally adopt when they meet what they consid'er fair game, . suggested a loan of the machine and ten pounds for travelling expenses. The reply came sharp and straight—from the shoulder—and the highwayman catching the-blo-w fair on the point went down liVo a log. Then the clergyman took «n. the character of the good Samaritan, and for "fifteen minutes attended to the sufferer till he regained consciousness, finally leaving 'him by the roadside a sadder and a wiser man.

, The sea was beautifully calm yesterday afternoon, and quite a number of fishing boats were out. There were a good many promenad-ers ulso on the south beach, there being a smooth surf- beaten path available close to the water when the sea lias but a light run. Back- along the cliffs- above the rifle range a number of spectators were enjoying a William Tell" contest taking place on the beach below, where sat a burgess asd his , goad lady, totally oblivious of those behind them, engaged in a trial of skill with the shingle as arrows and a good-sized stone balanced on the gentleman's walking ,jstipb,„,which Xas planted about ten yards away and close to the water's edge, as the apple. The lady ended the exhibition 'by a welldirected shot, which struck the stick near the base and dislodged the headpiece.
