AUCKLAND, January 5. Barnes compelled Mason to mate on tbe thirty-second move, and won tbe chess championship for the filth tima. The position of the players at the conclusion of tbe final round was as follows: — Won. Lost. At the social in connection with t2;c Chess Congress, prizes wer» distributed a* follows:—Third price, Mr James; fourth prute, Mr Dairies; fifth prise, Mr Miles; prixe for the largest number of games against prize-winners, Mr Edwards; prize for the quickest player, Mr Davies. Mr Dav-ies played seven games, and was only two games behind the champion. A silver match-box has been presented to Mr Edwards', the sole representative of t£e South Island.
