Per Press Association. WANGANUI, January 5. The police returns show that there was a diminution in crime in Wanganui in 1905 as compared with 1904. There were no serious cases in 1905. There were 185 charges of drunkenness as against 223 in 1904. BLENHEIM, January 5. The Customs duties collected at Wairau and Picton during 1905 amounted to £9409, an increase of £65 on the previous year. The total number of offences ia the Blenheim police district last year were 159 against 179; cases of drunkenness decreased from 76 to 63. The births were 247, an increase of 10. CHRISTCHURCH, January 5. Steps are to be taken locally, it is unucrstood, to secure a fuller compliance with ..he provisions of the Public Health Act in regard to the vaccination of children. The Hon. T. Y. Duncan, Minister of Lands, starts on an official visit to tihe West Coast to-morrow. The visit trill last for about a month. OAMARU, January 5. The prosecutions in the Magistrate's C<:-.irt for 1905 show an increase of 55 over 1904. the figures being 299 and 246 respectively. In 1905 there were 188 convictions for drunkenness, compared with 177 in 1904, an increase of 11. The other inc»eases were as follows :—Sly grog selling, 1904, none; 1905, two; vagrancy, 1904, 3'; 1905, 7; forging and uttering, 1904, none; 19.05, 22. This morning Alf Miller, an old offender, 1 on two charges of using obscene language in a public place, was sentenced to two months' hard labour. DUNEDIN, January 5. Ah You was fined £25 for having opium j in- his possession suitable for smoking. Ac-1 •-used had been twice previously convicted fcr a similar offence. .A deputation from the Harbour Board and business people waited on Sir Joseph Ward to object to taking land at Pelichet Bi:y, the property of the Board, for railway sheds. The Minister promised to favourably consider selecting a new site. Sir J. G. Ward intimated to-day to the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce that he could not sc-r !iis way to authorise individual receipts on telegraph forms. He was inclined to authorise the issuing of telegraph forms in books with receipts attached, those requiring such forms to pay .tjie.coji.of the books.
