THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY. United Press Association—Per Electric Telegraph l —Copyright. Received 11 p.m., January 3rd. SYDNEY, January 3. • The Assyrian, whose, name is Malouf, was to lave cone to Xew Zealand • • by" the .Manuka in accordance with the dictum...of the Minister of External Affaire that he must leave Australia. Just before the steamer sailed, Malouf informed the. authorities that he intended to stay aid fight the matter out: Malouf is an accredited American citizen by residence conditions, and was educated there. Had he left the State, the American Consul would have entered' a formal protest against the deportation of an American citizen.: ' Malouf's uncle is a very wcalthv resident of Sydney and intends to take his nephew's .case up before the Courts of the Empire. The Prime Minister's explanation puts a different complexion on the case. Malouf was only granted a permit to remain n year to Mind up some business of his mother's. He appealed for an extension of time, nnd the American Consul supported his application, affirming that he would guarantee his departure at thu expirv of the extended period. When the timt came. Malouf asked to be allowed to star permanently, but the Government were inexorable. On December 29th a cable menage from Sydney was as follows: —A hard case has cropped up under ihe Alien Restriction Act. In December 1893. an Assyrian was granted a permit to remain with" his relations for some months. He wae informed by a Customs official that bv having the permits renewed he could remain as long
t as he liked. On the strength of this adt vice he invested all his money in a country j store, which is now valued at £IOOO. The - permits were renewed until the present month, when he was informed that no fur- - ther renewal would be granted after the t permit expires m January. An appeal j to the Commonwealth authorities to remain ■ till he realised on his business -was unavailing. The Assyrian complains of cruel injustice; for he will have to sacrifice bin busine.SK after being led to believe that the renewal .was only "a matter of form. a———■——■——
