THE FIRST WOOL SALE.

'IKE FIRST WOOL SALE. : SATISFACTORY PRICES. The fiiist wool sale of the season was held in the Theatre Royal iast night, commencing at 7.30 p.m., and was "not completed at midnight. The wool was 'displayed in the several stores, and the buyers were busy yesterday in examining the contents of the bales, which were ripped and slashed to give tie buyers an opportunity to inspect the wool. The wool .:hown yesterday was very much lighter than has been seen for some seasons, the cool spring and absence of summer-hot weather so far not encouraging the production of " grease." Some of the wool latest received, is said to be dirtier than usual, owing to the oust blown about by recent uor-we.siers. This dirt however, cannot .have added weight to make up the deficiency in " grease." There was a full attendance cf buyers, and some little trouble appeared to be found in marshalling the- buyers into the four concentric curved rows of seats provided »for them, the chairman of the Woolbuyers'; Association having allotted seats according to ,a jiian which was nol- followed in sprovidir.g the seat* themselves, and there ■were some intensely eager conferences on the subject- between Mr Hill and other officials. Nevertheless the sale was commenced promptly afc 7.30 p.m.

Mr. Jonas, the first salesman, at the request of the Association and brokers, requested the audience of owners who filled the stal's; and half filled the pit (probably not intending to include some half dozen ladie:- iu the dressing rooms gallery) ,tcmainfain silence, to permit the buyers to keep their attention on their catalogues undisturbed: For the benefit of both sellers «md buyers he asked for perfect silence. The request for silence was observed for a couple of hours, and thin the buyers and auctioneers had to make, repeated protests. and threats of clearing the theatre, there was so much"' conversation going' on among the spectators.

The catalogue comprised 5363 bales, submitted in the following order by the brokers, the <,rder of sale.'; having been determined by Jia-lot—"M.
