Bower, and who has been a valued member .of. the directorate of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society, _is leaving on Tuesday next to pay a visit to the Old CoUntry}. and the 'leading , members of the' Society last eventog enferteined him as their giieit at . a social in the "supper room" of the Theatre iioyal. _ Mr •J. Apologies were made for'the Mayo?, a number' of the directors, and others. -
A nice light supper was laid by Mr Budd. Loyal toasts were, first duly honoured- " The King,". " Army, Wavy and Volunteers," with appropriate remarks on the de.'ensive forces by proposer and respondent, Mr Kirk and Sergeant : Major Jones. The chairman, in proposing the healtli;<if Mr Ferguson, said he.had fceen a, "director of the Society- for .five-and-twenty years, and had devoted a iarge amountof time and enei'gy to tie. development and maintenance of the interests of the Society, and such cohtinuity .of .effort was "very valuable in. the' constant changes that took place: in, its 1 cosmopolitan membership.; (It was remarked thafctfipugh Caledonians, onlyi: a.'mmority were .'Scotsmen.) .
