" An explosion in the Ttedash colliery at Thurmoad, West Virginia, killed ten men and a secondv explosion -killed fourteen would-be rescuers- Six men who returned complained of the fourteen's recklessness in carrying naked lights at a faster rate than fresh air could be supplied. AUCKLAND, March 21. r.:-32ie :inquest. concerning -the recent'-col-lision-between a 'bus and a tram concluded tprday, the ,jury: returning, the following verdict—Mrs' Foster met her death through injuries "received in a collision between a tram and a 'bus, the formeri going _at such a rate of speed that the motorman was unable to stop the car in time to avert an accident; the 'bus. driver should have taken more precaution before crossing the line. Riders, were added to the effect that the by-laws relating to vehicle traffic should be enforced on trains; that .the motormen should pass an examination other than by .the company's officers; that someone should be appointed by the Council to. see that the speed will not endanger the lives of the public; that a Royal Commission be set up to enquire into the entire working of the tramway system.
