THE PROPOSED CADET CORPS.
To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir,—Allow me, through your paper, to express my regret that nothing more has been said about the cadet corps which was to be formed in Timaru. Some considerable time ago a meeting of those intending to join the above corps was held in the Sophia street (hall. What was the use of this meeting? What good has come from it? Nothing at all. The .leading officers at- this meeting were Mr Craigie (the Mayor), Captain Hughes and Major Crawshaw. I must say that lam thoroughly astonished at the last-named-of these officers ; he'does ; very well with the schoolboys, as I was once an of liter under him myself. If a corps was formed, Major Crawshaw would most likely be placed in command. Perhaps he is frightened he could not manage the boys, this being the reason for not taking any steps to bring the thing to «t successful issue. This is an instance of Timaru style. Citizens call meetings, carry their object halfway, and - then let it drop, to lag on as best it can. Hoping to hear something about this corps shortly, I am, etc., WELLWISHER.
