CYCLING.
LEAGUE OF NEW ZEALAND WHEELMEN. ■ SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE. The annual meeting of- the South Canterbury centre of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen was held in the Club Hotel last evening. There was a bare quorum present: The Consul, Mr A. H. Bourn, presided. The secretary and treasurer, Mr H. Amos, and Messrs W. Lawson and C. Collins were the other members -present. The fifth annual report of the Committee _and the balance-sheet were read. • jfhe report stated, that the clubs affiliated . were the Temuka, Bicycle, Timaru Cycling, Timaru Tourists' Amateur, Waimate Cycling, North Otago Athletic and Cycling" Clubs and the Dunedin and Waimate Caledonian Societies. The Timaru Tourists' Club was practically extinct. All the clubs except the two Timaru and the Waimate clubs held sports meetings; the Temuka Club, which is in the most flourishing condition, held two. Permits were granted to Pleasant Point, Temuka and South Canterbury; Caledonian Societies, Geraldine St. Patrick's Society and Oamaru Hibernian Society.; Fifty-six racing licenses were issued. The receipts mounted to £2l- 4s 6d (including a balance of £3 0s 6d), and the expenditure to £lB Is 6d, leaving a balance of £3 3s. The chief items of expenditure were £8 9s 6d (half certain fees; received); secretary, £6 6s. Of the receipt?, £7 was received for 56 licenses, £4 for permits, £5 15s 6d for subscriptions., The racing during the season was fairly interesting; some of the events were • spoiled by competitors not making use-of their handicaps, and three competitors were fined -for this offence, and two for infringement of rules. The Centre had been unfortunate in losing their president, Dr R. S. Reid, who had acted in that capacity from the first. The disqualification of two riders was ordered to be continued until they have paid the fines imposed. Mr Bourn was elected president, and Mr Collins, consul; Mr Amos was ree'ecfced secretary and treasurer; handicappers, Messrs Rule, Miller and - Amos ; delegate to Council, Mr A. R. Barker, (Christchurch) ; executtive. committee.. Messrs Bourn, Lawson and Collins ; motordriver examiner (rule 14). Mr C. W. Wood The secretary mentioned that he hat 1 written 347 letters during the year. The secretary was instructed to write .to each of the affiliated Clubs asking them to ajopomt delegates. ° TEePresident brought up the disoualifjcation of Connell for something that hao pened at a championship meeting. He had always considered R. -Connell a very fcirider. and he proposed that the League be asked to consider the removal of the disqualification.—The secretary related the circumstances on- which the penalty wai im
posed.—Mr Lawson seconded the proposal, and it was carried.
Various votes of thanks were passed. A discussion took place on the possibility of enlivening interest in cycle racing in the district, but nothing was decided on. The meeting then closed.
