A Japanese nobleman at New York states that the injuries, to the transport-cruiser Lena, which arrived at San Francisco a few days ago, ore the result of engaging V Japanese cruiser westward off Farailones Islanfl. The cruiser is awaiting the Lena in the vicinity of San Francisco.- ■ • ■ ,
An impression prevails at Tokio that .the Lena called at Karsakavsk and took on board the Novik's guns and crew. Captain Berlinsk asks the Czar's permission to dismantle the Lena. • , '
The "Novoe Vremya" declares, that the Lena's arrival at San Francisco has struck fear into/the hearts of the contrabandists. Advices from St. Petersburg state that coaling places at sea have been 'admirabyl organised by the Germans for the Baltic squadron, which waits at Liban for further instructions. _ - • - -• -
Russia desires to retain the Calchas for cruiser purposes, and has oflered her owners" £IOO,OOO for the vessel.
SPECULATION IN VICTORIA: Received 0.59 a.m., .September 17th. LONDON, September 17. There is much speculation in Victoria, Biitish Columbia, over- the hurried 1 return of the cruiser Grafton fram Esqilimault. It is supposed to be connected with the activity of the Russian commerce destroyers in the Pacific. • •
THE CASE OF THE CALCHAS. Received 10.50 p.m., September 16th. LONDON, September 16. Pending an appeal regarding the Calchas, the "Time's" expresses the hope that the Russian Government will withdraw the Vladivostack Prize Court from an uncompromising and untenable position. The " Times " says that the British Government are tiound to adhere to Mr Balfour's and Lord Lansdowrie's recent ■ announcement that Britain will not recognise any Court's decision violating the rules of international law.
