£>. TEMUKA—SEPTEMBER 13th. (Before Mr C. A. Wray, S.M.) W. Whitta, Frederick Harris, Jolm Robb and Richard Jackman were charged that they on 25th August last, at Rangitata, did behave in a violent manner to annoyance of others, on the Government railway at Rangitata. Sergeant Warring conducted the prosecution, Mr Farnie appealed for Whitta, and Mr Raymond for Robb, Harris, and Jackman ". Evidence was given by E. J. Lezard (stationmaster at Rangitata), F. Webb, James Aitken, James Hewitson (guard), and Davidson. The Magistrate discharged Jackman, and after hearing the evidence of Robb and Harris, treated Whitta similarly. Robb and Harris were each fined 40s, with £3 18s costs. . W. J. Palmer (Mr Raymond) v. J. A. Goldring, claim* £lo' 4s for board and lodging. Mr Raymond stated that a notice to take evidence -in Dunedin had been filed, but as the case had already been adjourned for that purpose, it appeared that this was simply a dodge to gain time. He therefore asked for judgment, which was given for the amount claimed, with £2 14s costs. W. J. Palmer v. T. Lowe, claim £5 5s for board and residence. The circumstances of this case were similar to the previous one, and judgment was accordingly given with £1 5s 6d costs. Judgment summons ; —E. Pilbrow v. H. Kahu, claim £1 6s 6d. Defendant did not appear, and was ordered to pay the amount forthwith, in -default 48 hours' imprisonment in Timaru gaol. The police applied for a prohibition order against A. W. Surridge, but Mr Farnie, who appeared for Surridge, asked ior an adjournment for a month. The Bench thought this too long, so Mr Farnie requested a fortnight, but again this was considered moie than sufficient, and the application was adjourned for se-* ven days.
